When Hope Took Shape
Lucky Lizard Studios began unexpectedly in 1999, during a quiet overnight shift on a pediatric hematology and oncology unit in Syracuse, New York. Caryn Jaffe—now known to most as "CJ"—was working as a paramedic on an uneventful all-nighter of a mandated overtime shift. What began as a simple attempt to stay awake, a beading project, quickly became something far more meaningful when CJ attached her "Lucky Lizard" to her hospital ID tag.
On her next shift, CJ introduced her "Lucky Lizard" to a stressed teenage patient facing serious health challenges, afraid to get out of bed. After she left his room with plans to return later, to help him out of bed, he focused on her reassuring words,
"The Lucky Lizard’s gonna make it ok."
He hoped it would somehow influence his ability to walk. CJ and a nurse helped him walk without any problem. He sat down on the edge of his bed, let out a huge sigh of relief, pointed to CJ's Lucky Lizard, and said, "Give me that." That moment, breathed life into the Lucky Lizard making it much more than a bunch of beads on craft lace. It turned it into a symbol of comfort, strength, and optimism.
CJ's single act of suggesting her beaded creature could magically solve problems combined with the teen's trust and belief in her sparked an unplanned and deeply personal journey—one that continues to explore the powerful intersection of mind, body, spirit, healing, and human connection.
